1 IHTA 1984 , s18(2) states that if immediately before a transfer the transferor ( but not the transferor 's spouse ) is domiciled in the United Kingdom , the value in respect of which the transfer is exempt shall not exceed £55,000 less any amount previously taken into account for the purposes of that exemption .

8 ( 1 ) This section shall apply to any premises for which a public house licence is held and in respect of which an application for Sunday opening has not been granted under Schedule 4 to this Act : ( a ) if the holder of the licence gives notice of the application of the section to the premises in accordance with subsection ( 6 ) below , and ( b ) as from such date as may be specified in the said notice : Provided that a licence-holder shall not give notice of application as aforesaid , and this section shall not apply to the premises for which he holds his licence , unless : ( i ) the licensing board for the area within which the premises are situated is satisfied that the premises are structurally adapted and bona ride used , or intended to be used , for the purpose of habitually providing the customary main meal at midday or in the evening , or both , for the accommodation of persons frequenting the remises , and that the part of the premises mentioned in subsection 3 ) below does not contain a bar counter .
9 If we consider only the superficial elements of these changes in society , and deal with the problem purely at the level at which the Bill deals with it , we shall not do justice to the House or to the people of this country .

14 We have said clearly that we shall not accept changes in the rules on rabies unless we can have at least the same safeguards as we have today .
15 ( 2 ) A member of a licensing board who holds a disqualifying interest in a company shall not take part in any proceedings before the board in which that company is an applicant or an objector , and in this subsection " disqualifying interest " means a beneficial interest in shares or stocks of a close company within the meaning of section 282 of the Income and Corporation Taxes Act 1970 which have a total nominal value exceeding £ 50 or which amount to more than one hundredth part of the nominal value of the issued share capital , or stock , as the case may be , of the company or any class of such capital or stock .
16 ( 6 ) Where a licensing board decides to order the suspension of a licence , the suspension shall not take effect until the expiry of the time within which the holder of the licence may appeal to the sheriff , or , if the holder appeals to the sheriff or thereafter to the Court of Session , until the appeal has been determined in favour of the suspension or has been abandoned .
17 ( 6 ) Where a licensing board decides to make a closure order under this section , the order shall not take effect until the expiry of the time within which the holder of the licence may appeal to the sheriff , or , if the holder appeals to the sheriff or thereafter to the Court of Session , until the appeal has been determined in favour of the closure order or has been abandoned .
18 ( 7 ) Where a licensing board decides to order the suspension of a licence the suspension shall not take effect until the expiry of the time within which the holder of the licence may appeal to the sheriff , or , if the holder appeals to the sheriff or thereafter to the Court of Session , until the appeal has been determined in favour of the suspension or has been abandoned .
19 If there is any provision contained in these Guidelines or any agreement or arrangements of which they form part which causes or would cause these Guidelines or any agreement or arrangement of which they form part to be subject to registration under the Restrictive Trade Practices Act 1976 then that provision shall not take effect until the day after particulars of these Guidelines or any agreement or arrangements ( as the case may be ) shall have been duly furnished to the Director General of Fair Trading pursuant to that Act .
20 The technique may be a taxing one for us as readers , but it ensures that in seizing on details , we shall not lose sight of the ramifications of the whole .
